The brief

The team at The Event Space came to us wanting to deliver something memorable for their client, China Airlines, at one of the Gold Coast’s biggest annual events. As part of the China Airlines activation on the event lawn at the Gold Coast Marathon, they needed an experience that would stop foot traffic, get people engaged with the brand, and give runners and spectators something fun to remember the weekend by.

We were brought on by The Event Space to design and run the video experience, working closely with their team to bring the activation to life across both days of the marathon.

What we did

We set up a 360 video booth at the China Airlines activation on the event lawn, running across the full two-day event. The booth gave runners, supporters and passers-by a quick, high-energy way to capture their own slice of race weekend — no small feat with a constant stream of people moving through the space.

Each video was personalised to the guest. Before stepping onto the platform, guests were asked which race they’d just completed, and the attendant selected from 9 different custom templates built to match each race across the two-day event — so a marathon finisher and a 5.7km fun run finisher each walked away with a video that actually reflected their race. Every video also ran to a soundtrack selected by China Airlines, so the branding carried through the visuals and the sound. A custom branded display screen sat alongside the booth, keeping China Airlines front and centre for everyone passing through the lawn — whether they stepped up for a video or not.

The full activation included:

  • 360 video booth running within the China Airlines activation space
  • Custom branded display screen
  • Custom video templates matched to each individual race in the marathon (9 templates across the two days)
  • Soundtrack selected by China Airlines on every video
  • On-site attendants running the booth across both event days
  • Instant video delivery so guests could share their moment straight away
  • A high-throughput setup built to handle heavy foot traffic across the marathon weekend

The results

Over the two days, the booth captured 571 videos in total.

On Saturday, we produced 319 videos — a new video roughly every 50 seconds, back to back, all day.

Sunday told a different story. With runners nursing sore legs post-race, energy at the stand shifted, but the booth still kept moving — 252 videos captured, a video every 1.8 minutes.

Across the weekend, every guest walked away with a personalised, branded China Airlines video on their phone, ready to share — matched to their race, set to the client’s chosen soundtrack, and turning a few seconds at the stand into ongoing exposure for the brand well after the marathon wrapped up.

Why a 360 video booth was the right choice

It matched the pace of a high-traffic event. A marathon activation needs an experience that can keep up with a constant flow of people. A 360 video booth captures a guest in seconds, making it built for exactly this kind of high-throughput environment.

It felt personal, not generic. Matching the video template to the race each guest had just run meant every clip felt relevant to them individually, not like a one-size-fits-all branded overlay. That’s the kind of detail that gets a video watched twice and shared, rather than scrolled past.

It gave runners a moment to celebrate. For most guests, this was their first chance to properly show off their medal after crossing the finish line. The 360 format turned that into a slow-motion celebration — medal in hand, arms up, achievement on full display — giving runners a genuine moment of pride to capture, not just a quick brand photo.

It turned foot traffic into shareable content. Every video carried China Airlines branding out into guests’ own social feeds — extending the stand’s reach well beyond the people who visited it in person.

It worked for every kind of guest. From pre-race excitement on Saturday to post-race soreness on Sunday, the booth gave everyone — energetic or exhausted — an easy, low-effort way to take part and walk away with something worth sharing.
